Yan ZORITCHAK

Born the 13th in 1944 in Zdiar, Slovakia. He studied at the Higher School of Applied Glass in Zelezny Brod (1959 - 1963) and at the Higher School of Applied Arts in Prague (1963 - 1969). His years of study allowed him to learn from the tradition of Czech and Slovak glassmaking, but also from the modern advances of current design. At that time, Bohemian glass was one of the most important and renowned in the world. The 1960s in Czechoslovakia were free and inventive. Glass design was booming and innovative in all its forms, whether in applied art, industrial production, free design or architecture. Yann's work bears the characteristic signs of the majestic aesthetics of the sixties, which today take on the character of a style. The artist exploits the optical and technological qualities of glass, using non-traditional processes for handling the material. He gradually discovered a new artistic significance in the technique with the possibility of intensifying the expression through structures and their light effects. He completed his studies with Professor Stanislav Libensky.
The young artist shows a particular interest in space and the genesis of the cosmos, which will become the leitmotiv of his creation, in a decade full of important space discoveries (it begins with the first flight of the first man into space and ends shortly after the first moon landing in history). Since 1970, Yann Zoritchak has lived and worked in Talloires, France, and has played an important role as a mediator in the world of glass art in Europe. His creations can be found in numerous public and private collections throughout the world.
This artist has exhibited his work in major exhibitions of contemporary art and glass art. He is the recipient of prestigious international awards. In parallel to his work, he has participated in numerous symposiums, and in particular in the foundation of the International Research Centre for Glass and Art at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Aix en Provence. Yan Zoritchak was also awarded with medal of the Chevalier de l'Ordre des Arts et Lettres from French Republic.

Yan Zoritchak takes us on a journey through space and time in search of the origin of life and man's place in the universe. A way of reminding us with humility that we are only stardust that emerged about 14 billion years ago, and that the mysteries of life will undoubtedly remain a subject that will continue to question us and dream for a long time.
Zoritchak takes us on a whirlwind tour of astronomy, biology (the cells in the human body are surprisingly close to the cosmos) and contemporary art.
In a hymn to beauty, the artist Zoritchak immerses us in the mystery of this firmament and translates it into the language of art, thus creating a unique work. He bases his abstract works on the solid results of human research.
We witness the Big Bang - Mystery of Life as an amazed spectator.
The sculptures are pure with spaces of light, enriched with movement, dynamic circulation, bright colours, cloudiness.
Yan Zoritchak: « It is up to the public to see the mysteries of life, to guess them and eventually to accompany me on my journey, to wonder about this magic of life, its conception, protection, development and end ».
The fundamental question that has not yet been answered concerns humanity's position in the universe : are we alone or are there other civilisations besides ours ? Can we coexist and communicate on the scale of the universe ?
This sculptor reacts in his own way to these burning questions by creating vast cycles of work: spaces, signals, celestial flowers, the mystery of life...
Extensive cycles inspired by the universe, philosophical thought and human knowledge. Scientific explorations provided him with a solid base, the foundation on which he laid his cycles.
To transpose this fantastic universe, the artist uses glass, which is the first synthetic material created by man 3,000 years before Christ. Glass allows the materialization of space and emptiness. By developing his own techniques for fusing, abrading, cutting and polishing glass, Yan Zoritchak has managed to include metallic, gold, silver and copper leaf in the crystal.
In this way he creates fascinating microcosms and seems to imprison a piece of the cosmos, he simply offers us an odyssey into space. His sculptures are dreamlike, majestic, philosophical stones, the spectator enters a world of wonder and poetry.
